The side pockets are stretchy and good size. One pocket is cut at an angle for easy water bottle access, and that pocket can hold 2 1-liter Smartwater bottles. The other pocket is a bit deeper and cut horizontally. I was able to stuff my Deschutes tarp + net tent + polycro groundsheet into it, but it was a bit tight.
The internal volume of the Kakwa 40 is only slightly smaller than of the Circuit. Thus, the Kakwa 55 is much larger in the internal volume than the Circuit and even the Catalyst. However, the back, side, and hipbelt pockets on the Kakwa are smaller than on the Catalyst (I believe the Circuit has exactly the same pockets as the Catalyst). The Kakwa 40 is much lighter than even the Circuit (as is the Kakwa 55). I have done a little over 300 miles with it, with 20-30 lbs; even at the upper end the pack was hardly noticeable. It has really nice shoulder and hipbelt pockets. However, the padding on the hipbelt and shoulder straps is much thinner than on the ULA packs.
